May 24 -- Qi Qi (Steve)-- For Class Reuion:

Just got a chance to take a look at the 7926 website upon surviving the first semester of law school. First let me congratulate Lian Hui on her completion of MBA program. Well, I guess you got one more framed diploma to fill the wall in your office. Attorneys here call it "ego wall", I guess we Fudanese will call it "honor wall." Look at how many degrees our 7926 has gotten so far. Quite impressive. Come to think of it, getting a degree at this stage of our life is more for the sense of accomplishment than for a way of making a better living. That's probably what prompted me to go ahead for a J.D. degree and to be a licensed attorney. Whether I will survive the exstremely rigorous curriculum and passing the most difficult bar (California) in the U.S. is another matter, I guess.

I have to admit it was a really heart warming experience to see what has become of us. I believe the age has gotten the upper hand on me, since I have become more sentimental and nostalgic. It's kind of hard to put all these feelings into words, but one thing I can say is that, without Jesse's initiative of a class reunion, we wouldn't even have a web site! On that note, I think we all owe kudos to him. This is not to diminish the enormous efforts our webmaster, Steve Shi, has put into the website. As a matter of fact, Steve's sweat and blood in this website paid off in ways far beyond any measurements imaginable. The dancing baby, the romantic music, the ingenious design, and more importantly, the exchange of information on all of us, all stirred up the kind of emotion beyond the description of language. Steve deserves the full credit to getting us united on the web before we do that in person.

I have a suggestion, by the way. Why can't we create a webpage on its own without basing it on geocite. I don't know the technical term but I think Steve knows what I am talking about. My law school has a virtual classroom website which allows you to communicate with each other while you can get all the other benefits of an existing webpage. The problem with geocite is its lack of interaction, and, it's slow, and it's getting slower with more stuff putting into it.

On the reunion in Las Vegas, I think it's better done sooner than later. Life is short.

Anyway, I am just trying to put my thoughts together on the issue and see what your guys' responses are. I am all for September reunion, even though I preferred earlier date.

May 25 -- Lian Hui -- For Class Reunion:

I agree completely to what Steve has suggested with respect to the reunion. Congratulations to Steve, soon to be Esquire Steve Qi, for cracking into the nutshell of the American society. I am so impressed by your courage of enduring these incoming grilling years.

Nostolgia is the right word to hit the chord of my feeling towards the reunion. After years of "go-go" mood in this time-pressing world, it is time for us to reflect upon our past and to further our personal growth.

Hate to say that, as we approach or reach "middle age," wouldn't it be nice for us to catch a moment of reliving our youth together? No matter how rich some of us are, the beautiful time in Fudan era cannot be bought with money. It is a living experience which can only be refreshed through our sharing moments together. It's about a familiar smile of everyone. It's about the beautiful songs burst out of everyone's heart on the night of Dongshan trip. It's about the mad beer contest and the drankness during the graduation day. It's about the hungry long line after the class in the dinning hall. It's about these cartoon figures of professors drawn by Wang Zhan or Lu Ding on the desks of the classrooms. It's about the throwing of thermo bottles out of windows on the night of Chinese soccur team winning the Saudi. Many, many more...

Life is short and almost too realistic. Let's rock 'n roll now. Let's meet in September. Let's have fun. Let's bring our friendship to a higher level as we continue our life journey.

May 25 -- Wang Xin Cai (Tim)-- For Class Reuion:

Agree to the idea about building our own webspace.. the domain name and hosting fee could be shared by all, which should not exceed $30/person/year.

A BBS is needed in this webpage for us to post things like Hui and Qi just wrote. Chatroom might not be feasible... coz we will have difficult to come on to the net at same time.

An alternative for chatroom is to build a Fudan University channel on mIRC, which is completely free and almost real time.

May 25 -- Gu Jian She (James):

My web server will be ready next month, I provide web hosting service. Everybody just pay $15 for maintenance fee per year!

Please visit my website: www.aalinks.net or www.chineseyellowpages.org

Please visit Yu Weii's house: www.aalinks.net/House and Qi Qi's immigration service: www.chineseyellowpages.org/Ad_immigrat.htm

May 26 -- Yu Wei (Julius) found a new job in the East Coast. So he wants to sell his house in Washington. You can reach him via this email:    yujulius@pacifier.com

May 28 -- Shi Zhangchu (Steve):

Visit a new page: Fudan Slide Show. It prefers to use Netscape 4.0 or IE 4.0. I put 1980's Fudan photos. Hope reminding your good memory. Please click:

      Views of Fudan

May 29 -- Lian Hui (Hui Glennie):

"Steve added some slides of the old Fudan Scenary in the Newsletter 2. I am thrilled to see those. One of them, titled "The rainy day in Fudan," reminds me of our trip to Dingshanhu. It was a rainy day. We boarded a truck that had no cover. Steve Shi was singing loudly in the rain the song of "Ah! Misty Rain! You are so tender!" (Ah! Mao-mao yu!) As Zhang Xiao-qing and I were giggling about his song, we quitely pulled rain sheet away from Xu Shuang-Long, who by the time figured out who did him in was all wet. Steve was still singing the same song ignoring completely what was going on around him. Rain, song, laugh, fight for the rain sheet... Oh, boy, we were so young then.

Just a little piece of pleasant memory to share with you. Happy Memorial weekend!"

May 29 -- Wang Xin Cai (Tim):

"Hui mentioned Zhang Xiaoqing.... does anybody know any info about her?? I miss her....."

June 1 -- Fudan Oversea Alumni has linked 7926 Website to its Homesite. There are about 30 Class Websites inside. 7926 Website lists # 1. Design's quality is NO. 1.

Visit Fudan Oversea Alumni's Websites:           http://www.fudan.com

June 1 -- Happy Jiang Zelin's Birthday!

June 4 -- Yu Wei(Julius):

"I am back to Merck. A great company to work for. I will work in NJ and live in PA.
My work phone: 908-423-4277."

Yu Wei's new email:    julius_yu@merck.com

June 6 -- Shi Zhangchu(Steve): I changed 7926 Homepage with a frame design. Hope it is easy for your visiting. Using IE and America Online browsers you can get good results.

June 7 -- Lu Ding:

"I am back from Shanghai now. I talked to Yang Hongjun, Feng Jun and Zhang Song Hao. I met Xu Shuanglong and had lunch with him. (Wang Zhan was out of the town, but I heard that he has a new title in the municipal Zheng Xie, or city parliament). They all appreciate your web site and glad to hear that our classmates in USA are going to have a class reunion in Las Vegas in the coming September. By the way, I like the new face of your 7926 page with a nice frame design."

June 8 -- Lu Ding is elected a member of Board of Directors of CES (Chinese Economists Society). Website: http://china-ces.org/

June 9 --Gu Jian She(James):

"I would like to provide 7926's web with 50MB or more space --FREE. Due to the partership with another guy, I have to charge basic cost(Domain Registeration or renew fee, IP address and operating fee). Each classmate in USA just pays $15 (whole year!) to cover our cost, that's all. Right now we have web hosting, e-mail box and newsgroup services."

June 10 -- Shi Zhangchu sent email to everyone:

Lu Ding provided Xu Shuanglong's info and email. Welcome Shuanglong -- our classmate!

I like Web domain name(www) same as Qi Qi, Hui, Xin Cai mentioned two weeks ago. I hope the website is secure, stable and has a fast speed.

About 7926 web domain name, Gu Jian She likes to provide big space and a good price for 7926 everyone.

Thanks for Gu Jian She. So we decide everyone who lives united States sends $15 (personal check) to Gu Jian She directly. His address is:

James Gu, 12510 33rd Ave. NE, #B7,Seattle, WA 98125

I can handle all data uploading and transfering. I provide following website names for considering:

    www.fudan7926.com      Or   www.7926.com      Or   www.7926web.com

June 10 --Xu Shuanglong's picture & email address:

    nittan@public7.sta.net.cn

Shuanglong 6/99
Xu Shuanglong is the chief representative of Japan's Short-term Capital at Shanghai.

June 10 -- Frank Wang:

"I like the one Jesse preferred.(www.fudan7926.com) My check will be sent to Mr. Gu. (Hi James, should the check be payable to James Gu or Jian She Gu? Please advise.) I will bring my family to China this summer (from mid July to early August). I plan to visit Beijing and some places near Shanghai since My elder son likes to see the Great Wall and my younger son likes to see the panda. I like to know if the re-union date in September has been confirmed by all classmates. I have to budget my time and money for this big event.

June 10 -- Lian Hui:

"I have a dumb question. As a tech-idiot, I don't understand these web terminologies such like web hosting, so I am not at all clear what we are going to get. Are we going to get something like a message board where we can post our messages? I think it would be nice to have that feature. I'd appreciate it if someone can explain to me what the service provides in layman's term. Thanks. Concerning the domain name, I wonder whether we can substitute .net for .com because the latter sounds like a company. Given the current choices,I like www.fudan7926.com better although I have no problem with any other names."

June 10 -- Steve Shi:

"There are six domain names(.com, .net, .edu, .gov, .org, .mil) in Internet system. Most people and businesses use .com. It is very common and easy to remember. Normally, people pick .com as first choice, if can't get first choice, then select .net.

If more classmates like .net as our domain name, we will pick .net. But I like:     www.fudan7926.com"

June 10 -- Qi Qi:

"Agree. All the website names sound fine. just pick one of them. Sounds great. heck will be in the mail soon. Fudan7926 sounds better. Seems to me .net sounds better for our purpose. or .org. However, I will go with flow if most of you prefer .com."

June 10 -- Wang Xing Cai:

"Hui:
It is easy to add a message board, which is called BBS(bullet board service). people can post articles, pix, news. Other people can reply and comment on those posted stuffs. I think we need both BBS and Guestbook

My question is whether we should make the website in Simplified Chinese? I have the same question as Frank asked. Shall make checks payable to james gu or Jianshe Gu?"

Gu Jianshe, does your webserver supports CGI and frontpage extentions?"

June 10 -- Wang Xing Cai (Tim):

"It is not feasible for us to operate a physical web-server. high bandwidth connection is too expensive. T1 line costs several hundred dollars per month. Even ASDL line conneciton costs at least $100 per month. a server costs about $3000 and up. I don't see there are much risks involved to let the website be hosted by a third party."

June 10 -- Lu Ding:

"Xingcai: I visited your Islander's home page and I enjoyed it a lot (except that the Chinese characters for "Islander" read like a "bird man"). When I was in 7926 many years ago, I always thought myself as the best cartoonist in the class and never realized that you were such a fantastic cartoonist in your heart. I think everyone in the 7926 community should take a few minutes to enjoy your site.

I would also like to invite you guys to relax your nerves by visiting my site for Jokes about the Chinese Economy. I have updated it with some new stuffs I collected during my recent trip to China. Anyone who have heard something new is welcome to contribute.

http://members.xoom.com/DL6/index.htm

A bit more serious issue is a technical one: when Jianshe builds the new server or domain, it would be better to separate the pages of 7926 site into the ones open to guest visitors and the ones open to the registered members (with a password) only. It is a way to protect our privacy. Is it feasible? I look forward to the professional views of our computer gurus.

Cheers for the party and the game."

June 11 -- Wang Xing Cai (Tim):

"Lu Ding: Thanks for your nice comments. You remind me of one thing: I should setup a password on my "classmate" page.

The password and username will be our #(For secure reason). I will set it up asap.

I have already visited your homepage. it is very unique!"

*** For a secure reason, I hide our passward. On 7926 Birthday's page, I hide every classmate birthday's date.*** Steve Shi ***

June 11 -- Shi Zhangchu (Steve):

"Xing Cai: Thanks you for your setting up "classmate Pege". Can you also set up "7926 Guestbook", "View Guestbook" & BBS too? I did 2 nice pages (Guestbook & View Guestbook), but our server didn't support my design. It only gave me its format, but I don't like Geocities' design. If you can, I will link to your site right away. I like your Chinese website. Very Neat! I don't have software to make the website in Simplified Chinese. If you can do it, that is a big help."

June 11 -- Wang Xing Cai (Tim)

"Steve and all other dearest folks:

I will go to china next Tuesday. I will try my best to setup guest books for 7926 before I go. But i am desperately busy from now to Tuesday. Please forgive me if i can't make it.

Steve, please understand that my guestbook is 3rd party-provided.

Anyone wants me to bring back anything from China, please email to timwang@prodigy.net . I will check this email regularly in China.

Anyone in china wants me to bring things to China, please let me know before this Saturday, or I will not have time to buy things."

June 11 -- Gu Jian She (James):

"7926 Guys, we have web server, e-mail server, Name servers and SQL server, which are controlled by ourselves (100% control!).

Our web master, Steve Shi is able to 100% control our 7926's home page on our web server, and I would like to provide technical support on servers. Unlike to the Online service company ( American Online or MSN), they only provide web hosting service( rent space to somebody), on our servers, we have e-mail, newsgroup and hosting functions. You are 100% free on our web page and web server! (Tim Wang, we provide FrontPage extensions and newsgroup functions on our server).

I prefer to use www.fudan.com, but I think "www.fudan7926.org" is better, because we are non-profit organization, how about your opinion?"

June 12 -- Wang Xing Cai (Tim)

"I enjoyed so much about the discusions. I believe it is a good (and even mature!) attitude and approach to clarify certain things in the very beginning.

I do hope everyone does not feel so bad about certain negative aspects of the open discussions. These negative stuffs are actually the born by-products of all open-hearted discussions.

The most important thing is to get things done efficiently, effectively and economically! In the future, we need a voting mechanism in our organzation. This can be neatly achieved through websites.

I am not a computer expert. Therefore, I am so grateful to what Steve has done for us. I know he put great enthusiasm and huge amount of time in it. I also appreciate Jianshe and WangYu's suggestions. Suggestions are always good for us to start things."

June 13 -- Shi Zhangchu:

Thanks for Wang Xing Cai's (Tim) designing 7926 Guestbook. Please click links:

June 14 -- Gu Jian She (James):

"I am testing my News Server, if ready, 7926 has its newsgroup service, every classmate is able to post his or her articles, ideas or cyber-speech on it by using MS Outlook Express, and everybody can read them. If you like it, I can setup different newsgroups for 7926's members. We can 100% controll our newsgroups. I know you like freedom, that is our FREE world!"
